The Shoulder of Mutton is situated in the heart of Holcombe Village on the West Pennine Moors. The village overlooks the Irwell valley and is a 10 minute walk from the town of Ramsbottom. Well known as the Valley of the Wild Garlic.
The pub was built in 1751 and until 1849 a known venue for cock fighting. The Shoulder of Mutton stands on the slopes of Holcombe Hill where you can find the famous Peel Tower. This is more than a local landmark. It commemorates Sir Robert Peel, Prime Minister of Britain between 1841 and 1846, founder of the modern police force (once named 'Peelers' and still often referred to as 'Bobbles').
The Shoulder of Mutton is also famous for the starting point of the Holcombe Village Trail, a well known walk around the area. Locals and visitors from miles around descend on Holcombe on Good Friday for the famous walk and egg rolling competition which has taken place for centuries.
Holcombe Village is a true Lancashire country village with a true country English pub - The Shoulder of Mutton.
